Truck Accident Fatalities, Injury & Death

truck accident fatalitiesDid you know that one out of every eight traffic fatalities involve a semi truck?

In 2003, 457,000 semi trucks were involved in high speed traffic crashes in the United States. Of those accidents, almost five thousand resulted in a fatal truck accident.

Among traffic accidents in the United States, semi truck and tractor trailer accidents are among the most fatal. The law offices of Mcewen Law Firm are experienced and handle cases from start to finish ensuring that your case will receive personal attention.

In the year 2000 nearly eight times as many people in small passenger vehicles were killed compared to truck drivers. The number of people killed in small passenger vehicles that year was 5,567 compared to 713 truck drivers.

Tractor trailers pose the most serious risks amongst truck accidents accounting for 60% of all fatal accidents. Commercial trucks without trailers represent 28.8% of all fatal accidents. The heaviest tractor trailers, noted as Class 8 by the Federal government, account for 78% of all fatal truck accidents.

Between 2001 and 2003, a national sample of fatal semi truck and injury accident crashes was investigated. That study revealed that the injuries and fatalities resulting from truck accidents were occurring at an alarming rate and the legislature needs to take action. In order to reduce the number of deaths caused by truck drivers the legislature is continually being pushed to reduce traffic speeds for truck drivers as most passenger vehicles are not designed to withstand an impact from a speeding or out of control semi truck.

The study also revealed that the most common causes for truck accidents in the United States were due to fatigued truck drivers and driving in poor visibility conditions. In these types of accidents, additional common problems were improperly inspected brakes (almost 6 times more common than in passenger vehicles).

Fatal truck traffic accidents can be caused for a variety of reasons including:

  • An improperly trained truck driver.

  • Overloaded or oversized tractor trailer.

  • Improperly inspected brakes or headlights.

  • Truck driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Aggressive driving behavior.

  • Not using an under-ride protection under-guard.

  • Driving in poor conditions such as snow, rain, or fog.

  • Driving over the speed limit (which increases damage).

  • Failing to yield the right of way.
